Clanth looked at her suspiciously, and a little sadly. This was a touchy subject with the bird. Then he cooed gently and put his head down, with big, shining black eyes, then hopped closer to some invisible Female Bird, pecking gently at thin air, all the while cooing, and occasionally letting out a little serenade of hoarse song. Then he launched into the air, spinning, flipping and diving in a great airshow of feathers and joy. When at last he settled again, there was a terrible sadness in his clever eyes.
He had only done that once, and then he had lost her forever...

Clanth nodded slowly, half-forgiving, half in pain. Then he forced himself to brighten up a bit and gave her a look of, 'What do you want next?'. Anything to get his mind off his real mission.

Skye shrugged and out of boredom barked and chased her tail.

Clanth put his head on one side and chirruped in curiosity at the Dog's new strange behaviour.

Clanth giggled, one wing put over his beak in a comical way. He found the dog rather amusing, despite her previous ferocity at his arrival.

Clanth froze, his wing still infront of his beak, snickering. He could feel the air seem to freeze, although the sun was still scolding hot. Slowly he put his dark brown-black wing down, suddenly cold eyes locked onto the great lumbering figure heading in a slow, unconcerned bee-line towards them. The dog seemed mortified; Clanth slowly hopped infront of her, wishing he could communicate in some way; 'It's harmless - just stay still and it won't want to give chase!' But he could find no way. So instead the large bird put out his wings and tried to cover the Husky's face, using the technique a mother Striated Caracara would do prevent her chicks being afraid when their father fought other birds, but not thinking it would really work.
Oh, he hoped she didn't do anything stupid.

Skye ducked behind the bird as he spread his wings. The bird was huge and it covered her up. The bear stood on two legs and gorlwed sniffing the air twwice before coming down. It's teeth showed in a roar as it charged full blown at them. Skye wouldn't let the brd get hurt, she growled fiercly and stepped beside the bird growling. Her canines glistened in the weak sun and her fur bristled. Her gorlw echoed into the air as the bear roared and swung at the bird. Skye's paws left the gorund and the teeth dug into the bears paw. She threw it off balance and they both tumbled to the gorund. her being smaller she recovered and stood in front of the bird growling her teeth glistening with red crimson liquid....She was fierce!

What was happening!? Bears didn't just attack like that - did they!? No! What was wrong with it... The thoughts of worry were driven from his mind as the bear rampaged near; to late to hide, surely impossible to fight, and running was useless as it could easily swim, run and climb faster than any Husky. And he wouldn't fly to leave her... He angled his head dangerously and hissed, puffing out his wings far as they would go...
The dog leapt out infront of him just as the bear came close enough for worry and he squawked in alarm and fear for her. "No! Stop!" He tried to call, but too late! She had leapt and was snapping at the bear, ripping at it. He had to help... Clanth cawed, then launched to the air, flying up, up and away! He was moving fast, far from the scene of the crime, and as he looked down he saw the dog and bear turn to a dot and a blob, higher, clouds hit him and he felt their moisture wet his feathers, slicking them with dew. It would be so easy to fly away now; go, and never look back. Off to another land far away, like he should have done moons ago, carry on searching for his mate...
He turned and dived. The dog had protected him, but she was less than a third of the size of this bear - it was all he could do to thank the Sky Kingdom it hadn't been a fully grown male, for then they would surely both be dead by now. He knew what he had to do, and although he had seen better plans, it was relatively safe. Ish. As he neared he saw the dots turn to specks, and the specks turn to blobs, and the blobs to figures, and the figures to a Husky and a Bear and the huge bear raised a great, clawed, deadly paw ready to swipe at the dog...
His screech split open the air like a gunshot. Black eyes narrowed with fury he shot down toward the two and at the last second before he hit that paw his two large black-brown wings came out in an almost miracle-style opening. It helped him just enough to dodge the raking claws and before either of them knew it he was on its face, talons striking at nose, eyes, ears, whatever he could slash. It was dangerous, it was painful, it was stupid. It was for her.

Skye watched as the bird latched on and scrathced at the bear. Whining she ran and dug into its throat with her canines. her weight caused it to topple over and fall...on top of her. Yelping she closed her eyes to the pain trying to subside it. The bird had saved her. Skye whined and slid out from under the bears body. HEr body collapsed in agony....

The enormous body below him collapsed and for a moment he was blinded in pain and red flooded his half-open gaze as a renegade paw swiped. It swatted him from the air like a fly and he spiralled for a moment, dazed, alone, falling. The 3 bodies hit the ground at the same time. A groan slipped from Clanth's beak. A whimper from the dog. A growl from the bear. The Battle is always far from done, a voice whispered in his head, in her sweet, sweet voice... The Striated Caracara pushed himself to a lopsided standing position on the ground, using outstretched wings for balance. The dog would have to recover herself a moment; the other brute needed dealing with.
He circled and hissed. It did not rise from her limp black form. Hew cawed mockingly. It did nothing. He flapped and squawked. Nothing. He put his head back in confusement. What was it up to? A large, shaggy brown head rose up and stared at him... But its eyes were bloodied and dull, and its whole face seemed to be bleeding... It dawned on him as he looked slowly down at his talons, which were dripping with blood. Its eyes. He had gouged out its eyes.
Then another sound came from behind that sent his heart plummeting. Another bear would have been hard but okay. A mountain Lion could have killed them but been fine. Humans could have come and burned the world, and he would have been in less agony than at that sound. A tiny, quiet, "Mummy?"
His eyes travelled slowly on his swiveling head, although he needn't have looked to know what they had done. Time seemed to slow as a tiny bear cub, smaller than himself, wobbled out of a bush, big brown eyes wide, bottom lip wobbling. This bear was a Mother. He had gouged out her eyes. Without her eyes she couldn't see. Without sight she couldn't hunt. Couldn't hunt, so no food. So this little cub would die.
He felt like his guts were on the floor. He - Clanth - had condemned this innocent, tiny, speck of a being to death without a second thought. So filled with his selfish desires to protect that damned dog he hadn't stopped to consider what might happen. To look for her reason of attack. One sniff would have done it.

Skye stood and looked at the bear. its eyes were gouged out. A soft sound of whimpering reached her ears. Skye's heart broke in two. She had just almost killed the cubs mother! Walking forward she tried to walk to the bear cub but it growled and backed awya. She spoke in a motherly voice. I am sorry young one...i did not know it was your mother.....You will need help to survive young one please let me help. she finally was close to the cub. her voice soft and caring and her tail lowly wagging. She finally was gonna help something. The cub huddled against her as its mother lied its head down. A deep sigh escaped it then it was silent. The cub cried My mummy is is oh no nono.... she buried her face in Skyes thick coat as Skye looked at the bird. She shook her head and got a sad helpless act about her. Are you hungry young one? she looked at the bear with a look of caring in her eyes...

Clanth felt his heart flutter, then a new strength entered it; a resolution. He and the dog had got the bear family into this mess, so they would get them out of it. Together. But at first he was at a loss of what to do; how would he know how to treat a dying bear, or feed a young one? Then his head clicked into place, and he leapt up again, this time keeping his shadow on the bushes to prevent the small mammals below spotting it, and his wingbeats silent as he searched. Within 10 minutes he fluttered down beside the terrified young bear and dropped a small dead mouse and a finch infront of it, then bowed respectfully.
Now to tend to the elder. He slowly hopped forward, for once trying to look non-threatening and gentle, although he knew she could not see. Her blind gaze was raving, froth was pouring from her mouth and her side was heaving. Worriedly, he hopped around uselessly for a moment before flapping off and, using the small amount of knowledge he had, collected some Poppy Seeds, to ease the pain. Deciding she was larger than a few seeds worth he popped whole head onto her tongue. His heart quickened at her enormous fangs so close to him, yet did it all the same. Then he fluttered to some bushes and collected Tanzy from the shade. He began to crush it, hoping he was doing the right thing...
Maybe the dog would have some medicinal knowledge? He looked at her hopefully.
