Kane was excited. He did this every day on Whitefire's orders - it would be tiresome to anyone else. But the American Bulldog found it awful Thrilling. He called it inching to Victory, and that was what he was doing, if you thought about it right. He came here every morning, and every Evening, and he never met anyone. And it was fun.
He hummed a happy tune to himself as he bobbed along, quite contented with his chore. He had started at the beginning of the Summer, and now the leaves were turning beautiful Ambers and Reds, and the nights became darker and Chillier. It was Mid-fall. And he was here again, as the Sun rose that little bit later, as it did everyday. That was how he measured it, and it always worked: If he walked at the same pace all the way to the Border, then stopped when he first saw the Sun. And always he was just a few steps, or less, further. It was genius!
At last Kane scented the border of Lehren and the empty Territory, and he knew he was on yesterday's marker. He tentatively took another step, and just as he did a blinding Trickle of Light struck him. Orange daytime spilled over the edge of the Earth and the Whole World was illuminated around them. It was Sunrise. Immediately the American Bulldog stopped, hesitated, then a few inches over Yesterdays' border, cocked his leg and peed, then Scatted for good Measure.
He was extending the Lehren borders onto un-claimed territory, one pawstep at a time. Inching to Victory. Great Starclan, he was Good. Grinning, he began the Long walk back to Camp, bobbing his head as he went in time to his Happy Song. The border was about 20 feet further out then before he had started; why, this was rather fun!
